Halabiye

Located on the bank of Euphrates river west of Derezzor, Halabiye was first fortified during the apogee of the Palmyrene control in the area in the mid 3rd century, and was kept by Palmyreneans to defend the Eastern border of Roman Empire against the Persians. Halebiye was one of the most formidable Byzantine building projects in Syria. The site is particularly impressive at sunset when the shadows fall across the stark hills and the stone takes on a warmer colour. It is a roman counter fort dominating the Euphrates
