Jaabar castle is located on the left banks of Lake Assad, an artificial lake on the river Euphrates. The history of the castle is linked to the Crusades. Taken over by Seldjouk Sultan Malik Shah in 1087, the castle was integrated to the earldom of Edesse in 1104. The prince of Aleppo Imade ldin Zengui retook the city of Edesse (now a Turkish town called Urfa) in 1144 and the castle returned back to the Arabs in 1149. Destroyed by Mongolian invasions (between 1260 and 1400), the castle was partially rebuilt by Tengiz, the prince of Damascus
